Glossary Of Locksmith Terms

  • Lock Installation - The installation of a lock where one currently does not exist
  • Lock Rekey - The disassembly of a lock for the purpose of changing a key… renders the old key useless
  • Storefront Service - Most storefront doors are made up of a large plate of glass with a narrow aluminum frame encompassing it. Replacement parts for these type of doors are usually only available through Locksmiths
  • Aluminum Door - The type of door found on most stores…same as a storefront door
  • Throw-Up Deadbolt - Usually found on aluminum storefront type doors
  • Passage Lockset - A key-in-knob type lock that does not require a key in order to function
  • Keyed Alike Locks - Two (or more) locks that will operate with the same key
  • Key Impressioning - A technique used to manufacture a key where there is currently no key available
  • Key-In-Knob Lock - A door handle that accepts a key
  • Rim Cylinder - A lock cylinder that accepts a key and sandwiches the exterior and interior of the door...usually held through the door with a backing plate and 2 screws
  • Mortise Cylinder - A lock cylinder that accepts a key. The exterior of the cylinder is threaded and usually screwed into the lockset and held in place with an anchoring screw...most predominate on aluminum storefront type doors and mortise type locksets
  • Door Closer - A device that when attached to a door, causes the door to close without assistance
  • Panic Bar - A device that, when installed, allows for fast egress in the event of a fire or other emergency
