TV News Report on Lock Bumping Raises Concerns
On the Global TV evening news report of November 8, 2006 they showed exactly how to bump a lock open…almost any lock! For those who missed this news broadcast, it was a mini course on break and enter. We were approached by Global TV News on several occasions to show this technique to them but we flat-out refused. Our response to their request each time was “We are in the security business to help protect people’s property, not provide mini-courses to criminals on how to access that property quickly and easily”. We were diappointed to see this segment air. No self-respecting locksmith should have demonstrated this technique in front of a camera for public broadcast.We are now receiving many calls regarding “Lock Bumping” and customer concerns are growing and valid.Some key points about Lock Bumping that you should know…
- Not all locks are as easily bumped as the one displayed on the Global News broadcast.
- Not all locks can be bumped open. Some are impossible to perform this technique on.
- Most locks can only be bumped open one or two times…then this technique no longer works.
- Locks containing one or more pins that are at the maximum depth for that lock manufacturer will be next to impossible to bump.
